One-on-One Tutoring
At BrainBoost, we fit our programs to our students, not the other way around. When we begin, we get to know a student over a few sessions, while dealing with their most immediate and pressing concerns. As we begin to understand the student, we theorize about what underlying issues might be affecting how the student functions. We test these theories, collect data and eliminate or update the theories as new information comes in. This approach allows us to use research supported teaching tools in a highly individualized way.
We Enjoy Working With Students Who:
- have been identified with a learning disability
- seem to chronically underachieve in school
- really need a meaningful challenge
- have struggled with social and emotional issues
Different Minds, Different Approaches
We are equipped to deal with kids who have unique academic profiles. In fact, we relish the fact that every kid is different, and we utilize it to our advantage.
In particular, we are comfortable working with kids who have been identified as having a learning disability, kids who chronically underachieve in school, and kids who are academically gifted and often we find all three in the same kid!
We appreciate and enjoy our students, and that helps us provide personalized solutions that work.
Concrete Improvements
Although we're interested in far more than just improving grades, our tutors focus on getting results that matter to you and your kids. We integrate feedback from every part of the tutoring process - from our initial consultations, to our frequent e-mails and conversations - as we adapt and adjust our approach. Together with parents, teachers and students, we can create and meet goals that matter to you and your family.
Homework Help
One of the limitations of one-on-one tutoring is that the progress a student sees in a session can be hard to keep up when the student does homework by themselves, or returns to school.
Homework Help offers a unique opportunity for students to receive support while working independently. Students work through an independent program set by their one on one tutor, or on homework assigned from school, but receive guidance and support from a homework help tutor who works with a small group of students (4-6 students).
Homework Help is a cost-effective way to develop independent studying, focusing and planning skills.
Our Homework Help sessions are:
Resource Rich: In their Homework Help sessions students will work in our very cool, cutting-edge resource library. This library has electronic and print resources that tie to provincial curricula, as well as extending beyond into the real world. We make sure your child knows how to find the information they need, and use it.
Able to Address Multiple Goals: Homework Help sessions can focus on school-based assignments (like studying for tests, or doing projects), or on assignments or projects that come out of one-on-one sessions.
Helpful ... But Not Too Helpful! Kids who struggle academically are often masters of getting the answers out of people. Our tutors target their help at just the right level: making sure that the kid is oriented and feels supported, while ensuring their work is truly independent

BrainBoost Workspace Program
Many students use BrainBoost’s support to complete
correspondence
courses on their own time, at their own pace, and in a way that makes
the course(s) meaningful and useful to them. Our correspondence support
packages provide you with the support and discipline you need to ensure
you finish your courses and truly understand and enjoy the material at
hand.
Each package comes with a different number of
tutoring and homework help sessions. We generally suggest two sessions
a week for each correspondence course. The homework help time is for
asking additional questions, receiving support on your assignments,
working on practice material and studying.
In addition to basic tutoring and homework help, each
package comes with two essential products:
1) Magic Number
Monitoring: This
job is performed by our ever-friendly, ever-persistent, student
services worker who will ensure that you attain your term goals by
helping you to figure out how much you need to do each week, and bug
you to get that done by the end of the week. If you do not complete you
“magic number” by the end of the week, we ask that you come in on the
weekend to complete your magic number for the week and stay on track
with your term goals.
2) Practice Tests:
An important
antidote to test anxiety, and poor test performance is writing practice
tests. With each package, you have the opportunity to request practice
tests for any unit in the course. Your tutor will provide a practice
test, and the student services support worker will set up a time for
you to come in and write the test in a test-like environment. Many
students have found that this has helped a huge amount with test
performance.

Math Boost
What is Math Boost?
MathBoost is a series of two three-hour sessions designed to prepare students for their final exams in Math. Each grade has its own set of seminars that will center on concepts and questions that are likely to be on the final exams. We focus on exam strategies, common tricks that teachers use, and take concepts that seemed tricky in class and make them logical and interesting. The course is fun and energetic. Also, students take home a study guide so that MathBoost can help at home too. Tutors are available during and after the sessions to answer questions and to make sure that the students understand the material. If you have any questions about what we're going to teach, please don't hesistate to call us at 604.723.0904.
Click here to see the MathBoost flyer.
Who is teaching MathBoost?
MathBoost is taught by Matt Giammarino. Matt is a director of BrainBoost Tutoring, a Masters student in special education at UBC, and a published researcher in Educational Psychology. Science and Socials Boost
We here at BrainBoost have been noticing that some of the biggest worries of our Grade 10 and 11 students are the looming Science 10 and Socials 11 Provincials. And we don't blame them! Science in general seems to be a tricky subject for many, and this is also students' first attempts at provincial exams in highschool. Anxiety over this is quite natural! Also, Socials 11 is widely regarded as a difficult course because it covers so much material in fine detail. Even teachers complain that the course is so large in scope that they struggle to cover it by the end of the year.
Recognizing this need amongst our students, BrainBoost is pleased to announce 2 programs designed to get students ready for these daunting exams: Science Boost and Socials Boost. Like the popular Math Boost program, these are two three-hour seminars taught by our resident expert tutors; Science guru Andy Schramm will be at the forefront of the exciting Science 10 seminars, and Social Studies expert Chris Griffith will lead the Socials reviews. By the end of both of these Boosts, students will be armed with a formidable array of exam strategies, have a better understanding of the material covered in the courses, and be ready for many of the tricks that they will see on these exams. Taught at The Hub, these reviews are fun and energetic, and students will be able to take home materials that will help them study indpendently as well. This program will be open to the general public as well as BrainBoost students, so let all your friends know - everyone is welcome!
Check out the SocialsBoost flyer or the ScienceBoost flyer.
